On July 4th, 2025, the President signed a budget reconciliation bill that eliminated federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) effective September 30, 2025.
As a valued partner, we understand you may have questions about the future of Nebraska Extension’s health and nutrition programming. For questions about the future of Nebraska SNAP-Ed, please contact Natalie Sehi (nsehi2@unl.edu).
Below is a list of answers to questions you might have.
- Has the SNAP-Ed program officially ended in Nebraska?
Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program–Education (SNAP-Ed) is officially ending nationally, effective September 30, 2025. This means Nebraska Extension will need to wind down their SNAP-Ed funded programs.
- What specific services/programs are going away?
Many of the educational programs delivered at qualifying community sites, such as schools, senior centers, farmers markets, and food pantries, have been supported by SNAP-Ed funding. As the Nebraska SNAP-Ed program winds down, programming and nutrition education materials may look different in the future.
- Will Nebraska Extension still offer food, nutrition, and health-related programs?
Yes. Nebraska Extension continues to prioritize the health and well-being of Nebraskans. However, this work will look different with the wind down of SNAP-Ed programming.
- Is Nebraska Extension leaving my county?
Nebraska Extension continues to serve every county in Nebraska. While SNAP-Ed programming is winding down, our broader educational and outreach mission continues.
- Was this decision due to problems with Nebraska Extension’s SNAP-Ed program?
No. Nebraska Extension’s SNAP-Ed program has a strong record of success and community impact. The decision to eliminate SNAP-Ed funding was made at the federal level and does not reflect program quality or outcomes.
