Control Diabetes for Life Questions or comments? Contact Debra Schroeder, MS, Extension Educator and Class Coordinator Control Diabetes for Life is an educational program that is offered 1-3 times a year in various locations in Nebraska. The sessions are broadcast to several locations throughout the state and recorded for later viewing. Participants learn to control diabetes while preparing nutritious and delicious foods that are low in sugar and fat. What’s it like to be a high school athlete and wake up one morning and find out that you have juvenile diabetes?
One in three children born after 2000 will be diagnosed with diabetes at some point in their lifetime.
Robert Kreikemeier of West Point, Nebraska talks openly about his life with Juvenile Diabetes to an audience of young people and their parents. He explains his feelings as he first learned he had diabetes and how he learned to manage his diabetes.
Kreikemeier’s presentation, "Diabetes and Me" offers hope to young people with Juvenile Diabetes. He shares his life experiences with the disease with frankness and humor.

Impact of Control Diabetes for Life Program in Nebraska
Control Diabetes is the 2009 United States Department of Agriculture Preister Health Award winner!
- Control Diabetes for Life has reached 4,500 people in its nine year history in areas not previously offering classes for persons with diabetes
- This program has provided a way to reach low income people diagnosed with diabetes as it is offered free of charge
- Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services calculates the value of diabetes education at $900 per patient in savings of medical costs and loss of earning due to illness
- A conservative estimate of savings for 2009 would be $360,000
