Take the $10 a week Challenge to Eat Local and Buy Local
Grow Nebraska's Economy!

Why eat local?

Eating local foods supports local, small family farmers that are preserving a taste of yesterday for our enjoyment today. They are planting heirloom seeds and raising rare heritage breeds of animals and poultry that are full of flavor.

Eating vegetables, fruit, and meat from your local family farmers taste better and is more nutritious because it is raised closer to your dining table and is grown for flavor and nutrition - not for shipping a long distance that may take a week from harvest to the dinner - table losing its vitality.

Eating local and seasonal reduces your carbon foodprint because it takes a lot more fuel to get tomatoes or peppers from California or Mexico compared to your local direct-to-consumer market and you save money by purchasing in season and preserving for future enjoyment.

Eating local builds community because you get to know your farmer and your food and by re-establishing that connection between your grower and you causing more jobs to be created that boost the local economy.

Eating local food improves your local economy - If each household in Nebraska (715,703 according to 2011 census) spent just $10 a week, on local grown agricultural products it could bring $371 million back into the local economy each year!
